
Southern Miss Splits Doubleheader at Georgia Southern Saturday Afternoon

STATESBORO, Ga. – Carson Paetow had two hits in each game of a twinbill as Southern Miss dropped the opener 13-1 in eight innings, before defeating Georgia Southern 9-4 in the nightcap Saturday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (15-8 overall 4-1 Sun Belt) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win in the nightcap, while Georgia Southern now sits at 10-12, 2-3. The final and deciding game of the series takes place, Sunday, at 11 a.m. CT.
In the second game, Southern Miss jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a solo run. After a Jacob Keys leadoff single and a sacrifice to push him to second, he went to third on a groundout before Ozzie Pratt doubled over the left fielder's head to plate the run. Pratt hit safely in both games to extend his current team-best hitting streak to nine.
The homestanding Eagles, though, then scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth frames, coming on a JD Kaiser sacrifice fly and then another tally on a grounded into double play to take the lead. Kaiser then added a two-run homer in the sixth to give Georgia Southern a 4-1 advantage, before Southern Miss rallied for eight runs over the final three innings.
Billy Butler cut the gap to 4-2 in the seventh with an RBI single, before the visitors took the lead with three runs in the eighth. Pinch hitter Braden Luke knocked in the first run via an error before Dalton McIntyre tallied an RBI on a fielder's choice before Slade Wilks singled in the go-ahead run.
The Golden Eagles then added four insurance runs in the ninth, led off with a single from Paetow, as Nick Monistere collected a run-scoring single, followed by an RBI double by Gabe Broadus before McIntrye knocked in the final two runs with a double of his own.
Although he did not earn a decision, Southern Miss starter Billy Oldham allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Colby Allen got the win to improve to 3-0 after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless frames with no hits and two walks with three strikeouts. JB Middleton got the final three outs in the ninth.
Joey White allowed three runs (two earned) over 1/3 of an inning on a hit to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
