STATESBORO, Ga. – The Southern Miss baseball team continues its four-game road swing this weekend with a three-game Sun Belt series against Georgia Southern. The series opens with a 5:30 p.m. CT contest Friday.
Â
The series can be seen on ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
The No. 25 Golden Eagles opened up this week with an 8-3 setback versus Ole Miss Tuesday at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., the home of the Double A Mississippi Braves, but have won six of the last eight games.
Â
Southern Miss has played Georgia Southern seven times in their series dating back to 2007 and hold a 6-1 overall record, but this is the program's first trip for baseball to Statesboro. The first game of the series took place in the Screentech Wireless Classic at Northcutt Field in Dothan, Ala., in 2007 with Southern Miss capturing a 7-1 decision. Five of the first seven meetings in this series have been decided by two runs or less.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened their second season of Sun Belt Conference play last weekend with a three-game home sweep of Marshall, outscoring the Thundering Herd 17-10 in the series. Southern Miss has now won nine of 11 Sun Belt Conference series, including five sweeps.
Â
Junior shortstop Ozzie Pratt enjoys the current longest hitting streak for the Golden Eagles at seven games. He has batted .462 over this stretch (12x26) with four doubles, a home run, eight runs and six RBI. His stretch has included a grand slam at Louisiana Tech (3/10). In fact, he has hit safely in 15 of 21 games and has a team-best eight, two-hit contests in 2024, while hitting in six different spots in the lineup. The longest hitting streaks for the Golden Eagles this season have included both Dalton McIntyre and Slade Wilks who had their respective 10-gamers snapped last weekend with Marshall.
Â
Southern Miss has scored 29 of its 134 runs in the opening frame this season, good for 21.6 percent of its scoring production. The Golden Eagles have scored in the opening inning in 11 of 21 games this season and are 8-3 in those contests.
Â
Georgia Southern (9-11, 1-2 Sun Belt) last two of three games at Old Dominion last weekend in their league series opener before dropping a home midweek contest against the College of Charleston 8-6.
Following the Georgia Southern series, Southern Miss returns home for four-straight contests starting Tuesday with a 6 p.m., non-conference game with Tulane.
