Baseball Falls in Series Finale Sunday 3-1 at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern scored a solo run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to break up a tie score in defeating Southern Miss 3-1 Sunday afternoon to win the Sun Belt Conference series at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The Golden Eagles fell to 15-9 overall and 4-2 in SBC play, while Georgia Southern improved to 11-12 and 3-3.
After three scoreless innings, Slade Wilks put the Golden Eagles up early with a leadoff home run to right center in the fourth. It was his fifth of the year and 37 of his career.
The homestanding Eagles, though, tied the score in the bottom half of the frame. After a leadoff single and a walk, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base before JP Herrholz knocked in the tying run with a groundout to first.
Georgia Southern took the lead in the eighth one a two-out pop fly on the infield that was misplayed by Nick Monistere at second. The Eagles, with two outs, had a runner at first base at the start of the play and he rounded the bases to score on the missed fly ball.
The home team then added an insurance run in the eight on back-to-back doubles, the second one came with an RBI from Kent Scmidt to complete the scoring.
Ty Fisher went the distance for Georgia Southern to get the win and improve to 4-1. He allowed just four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Kros Sivley, who three the final two innings for the Golden Eagles suffered the loss and fell to 1-3, after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Will Armistead enjoyed a solid start for the Golden Eagles as he limited the home team to a run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six innings.
The Golden Eagles return home for the first of four games when they entertain Tulane in a 6 p.m., contest Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park.
