HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Drey Barrett's three-run home run led to a four-run first in helping lift the Gold over the Black 7-6 Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in game three of the Southern Miss Fall World Series.
In the best of five series, the Gold took a 2-1 advantage as KL Farr threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings with no hits and no walks with two strikeouts. Josh Och got the final two outs in the seventh of the seven-inning game to earn the save.
Down 4-0 after the Gold's solid first frame, the Black cut into the lead with three runs in the second. With two outs, Lawson Odom posted a two-out single before an RBI double from Gavin Smith. Cade Baker then added a home run to left to cut the gap to 4-3.
The Gold extended its lead with a two-run fourth. Henry Abt doubled with one out and then scored on a pair of wild pitches. Shaun Cover, who walked three times in the game, got a free pass and went to second a wild pitch before stealing third. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth Smith
Four Black pitching walks an inning later lead to the final Gold run as they extended their lead to 7-3.
The Black squad added three runs in the sixth. Brady Waugh opened the inning with a single. He then moved up a base on a Gillespie shot to right that was misplayed, putting two runners on base. A walk loaded the bases. After a strikeout Odom knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Smith knocked into the final two runs with a double.
For the series, the freshman, Smith, is 6-for-8 with three doubles and a triple with four RBI.
Black starter, Bankston Walters, suffered the loss by allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout over an inning-plus of work.
