HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A battle between the top two teams in Conference USA takes places this weekend when Southern Miss entertains UTSA in a key three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Game times for the series include a 6:30 p.m., Friday contest, followed by a 2 p.m., Saturday tilt and then will conclude Sunday with an 11 a.m., start. All three games can be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as be seen on ESPN+. The program will hold Senior Night Friday evening as they will recognize Drew Boyd, Gabe Montenegro and Hunter Riggins prior to the contest.
In the C-USA league race, the No. 14-ranked Golden Eagles (36-13 overall 18-6 C-USA) hold a two-game advantage over the Roadrunners (32-16, 16-8) atop the league standings.
The two schools have met 25 times in a series dating back to 2014 with the Golden Eagles holding an 18-7 advantage, including a three-game sweep last season in San Antonio. The final game of the four-game set was rained out.
Southern Miss has won the last four meetings between the two schools and eight of the last 10 as well as five of the seven C-USA series against the Roadrunners - including four sweeps.
Montenegro continues to move up the Golden Eagle career offensive charts as he ranks tied for No. 2 in games played (243), second in at bats (950), No. 3 in hits (300), singles (226) and runs (204) and No. 5 in walks (126). When he appears in his next two contests, he will become the all-time leader in games played at the school, surpassing Marc Maddox, who played in 244 contests from 2003-06.
After a two-hit game versus Ole Miss, Wednesday, sophomore shortstop Dustin Dickerson continues to lead the team offensively at .342. Catcher Rodrigo Montenegro went over the .300 mark in that contest and is now hitting at .302.
Christopher Sargent retook the team's home run lead at 15, by belting his team-leading shot against Ole Miss Wednesday night. He leads Will McGillis, who has 14 this season. Sargent also paces the squad in RBI with 46.
The right-handed trio of Tanner Hall (7-1, 2.31 ERA), Riggins (5-4, 3.18 ERA) and Hurston Waldrep (5-1, 2.54 ERA) will continue to be the rotation for Southern Miss against UTSA this weekend.
Following the UTSA series, the Golden Eagles conclude the regular season at Middle Tennessee in a series that runs next Thursday-Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
