HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Black squad scored twice in each of the first two innings and starter Grayden Harris allowed just one hit over three innings with five strikeouts to defeat the Gold 5-3 Friday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in game of the Southern Miss Fall World Series.
Freshman Gavin Smith went 3-for-3 to lead the way for the Black as they pounded out 11 hits in the game, with Brady Waugh adding a pair of hits as well.
William Tonsmeire opened the game with a triple over the Gold right fielder's head for a triple and scored one batter later via a Waugh infield single. Waugh then ended up at third on a groundout, followed by a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed by Gold pitcher Drew Harrison before scoring on a sacrifice from Cade Baker.
The Black team then added two more in the second. After a leadoff single by Lawson Odom, Smith tripled one batter later to score Odom. He then scored on a Bankston Walters double.
Gray Eubanks led off the fourth with the Black's third triple of the game and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Odom which capped the Black's scoring.
