HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Gold collected just one hit, but took advantage of 12 Black squad walks, to help them even the best of five Southern Miss Fall Series Sunday night with a 6-4 extra-inning victory at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The series now stands at one game apiece with game three set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Both starting pitchers limited the other team's opportunities to start the contest as Camden Sunstrom allowed no runs on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts for the home Black squad. Camden Clark was equally as good with three scoreless frames, giving up just one hit and fanned five with no walks.
The Gold, which got their only hit on a first-inning single by Drey Barrett, took advantage six walks in the fifth and a two-out infield error by Black second baseman Brady Waugh to plate four runs in the frame.
A four-run seventh for the Black team in the last schedule inning tied the score to push the game to an extra frame. In the seventh, the Black got a leadoff single from Lawson Odom before a double to Gavin Smith and a walk Bankston Walters loaded the bases.
After a force out at the plate, William Tonsmeire doubled in a pair of runs before Waugh knocked in two more with a single to tie the game, but the Black squad stranded two runners to send things into an extra inning.
With a runner placed on second base to open the frame, Tucker Stockman's bunt was thrown to third wildly and two runners were on with no outs. The next batter grounded into a double play and the potential go-ahead run stayed at third. The Black then issued three walks and committed a catcher's interference over the next four batters to account for the go-ahead runs.
Jackson Meehan threw the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on a hit and a walk with three strikeouts to earn the victory, while Luke Williams allowed two unearned runs over two-thirds of a frame with three walks to suffer the loss.
Tonsmeire, Waugh and Odom each had two hits in the nine-hit Black attack.
