NORFOLK, Va. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against Old Dominion Easter Weekend series, starting Thursday with a 5 p.m. CT contest from the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Â
All three games can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
The No. 8 ranked Golden Eagles (21-8 overall, 5-4 Sun Belt) find themselves in a four-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with Arkansas State, South Alabama and Marshall. They trail league leader Coastal Carolina (9-0) by four games, and both Texas State and ULM (6-3) by one game out of second place. The Monarchs (13-15, 3-6) are tied for 10th place along with Louisiana, App State and Georgia Southern.
Â
The Golden Eagles look to rebound from a 5-1 midweek setback to Southeastern Louisiana at home Tuesday night, after finishing March with a 12-7 record.
Â
The ODU series dates back to the 2015 campaign, when both teams were members of Conference USA. The Golden Eagles hold a 15-6 record in the series and have played the Monarchs seven times since both teams changed leagues to the Sun Belt for the 2023 season. Southern Miss leads 5-2 since joining the SBC, including winning two of three games in Hattiesburg last season as well as a 10-0, seven inning victory in the league tournament in Montgomery.
Â
This will be the first visit to Norfolk for the Golden Eagles since winning two of three on Easter Weekend in 2023.
Â
Senior Joey Urban continues to hit well for Southern Miss as he currently holds a team-best seven-game hitting streak. Over that span, Urban has scored nine times while collecting a double, a home run and seven RBI. For the season, he is hitting .318 with eight homers and a team-best tying 28 RBI.
Â
Kyle Morrison, who had two hits against the Lions, continues to lead the squad in hitting at .353 with a team-high 10 home runs to go along with 28 RBI. Davis Gillespie also is hitting well for the Golden Eagles with a .309 average, while Gray Eubanks is at .300.
Â
The pitching plans for the weekend will be the same for the Golden Eagles over the first two games, with left-hander Grayden Harris (4-1, 3.58 ERA) set for the opener and right-hander Camden Sunstrom (2-1, 1.89 ERA) planning to get the nod in the middle game on Friday. The series finale starter is undecided at this time for Southern Miss.
Â
Following the ODU series, the Golden Eagles return home for a midweek matchup Tuesday against New Orleans at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
