Davis Gillespie Homers Twice to Lead Baseball over ODU 10-4 Thursday Night

NORFOLK, Va. – Davis Gillespie homered twice and No. 8 Southern Miss registered a season-high 15 hits to upend Old Dominion 10-4 Thursday Night at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex to open a Sun Belt Conference series.
The Golden Eagles (22-8 overall, 6-4 Sun Belt) scored in six different innings as Gillespie and Smith led the Southern Miss attack with three hits apiece.
Gillespie got the Golden Eagles going with a two-run homer in the first to open the scoring as the visitors registered six hits in a row at one point, adding another run on a Drey Barrett RBI single to make it 3-0.
A Kyle Morrison run-scoring single made it 4-0 in the second, before Gillespie added to the lead with a solo homer to open the fifth off ODU starter Darin Kuskie. Gillespie increased his homers total to eight as it marked the third time this season a Southern Miss player belted two homers in a game.
Kuskie (2-5) suffered the loss for the Monarchs (13-16, 3-7) as he allowed five runs on 12 hits with a walk and three strikeouts over five innings.
The Golden Eagles then added a solo run in the sixth on a Smith run-scoring double, before Matthew Russo added a two-run homer in the seventh – his fourth – while Tucker Stockman added a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run frame. The final run was scored in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Russo.
Grayden Harris threw six strong innings for the Golden Eagles as he allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts to get the win and improve to 5-1.
The two runs he allowed to the Monarchs came in the fifth on a home run by Maverick Stallings, who hit his fifth, along with an RBI single from Efrain Morales.
The Monarchs added another run in the seventh on a Zach Leite run-scoring single and loaded the bases with two outs. Camden Clark then entered the game and got a strikeout to leave all three baserunners stranded.
Clark followed that with three strikeouts in the eighth, before ODU added their final run of the contest in the ninth, which started with a runner reaching bases on a dropped fly ball by Smith to open the frame.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. CT.
