HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Brody Capps belted a two-run home run to highlight a four-run fourth in leading Southeastern Louisiana to a 5-1 non-conference baseball victory over No. 8 Southern Miss Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (21-8) lost for the second consecutive and now set their sights back to Sun Belt Conference play as they travel to Old Dominion for a Thursday-Saturday league series. The Lions (17-12) snapped a four-game losing streak to Southern Miss.
Southern Miss starter Kros Sivley retired the first seven batters and got through the first three innings scoreless before the Lions opened the fourth with a leadoff single. Capps then followed with a two-run home run off the videoboard in left center for his seventh of the year. After a hit by a pitch and a single, the Golden Eagles went to the bullpen for Bruce Littleton. After a sacrifice to move both runners up 90 feet, Alex Perry knocked in the third run with a run-scoring single before a successful suicide squeeze from Dane Watts.
Sivley (3-2) suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts over three-plus frames.
The Lions added their final run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to Williams.
SLU starter Luke Lirette limited the Golden Eagles to five hits and two walks over 6 2/3 shutout innings to earn the victory and improve to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles managed their only run in the eighth. After Joey Urban led off with a single and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, Ben Higdon knocked him in four batters later with a single, but the Golden Eagles stranded two runners in the frame.
For the game, Southern Miss left 10 runners on base.
It was the first time Southern Miss had been blanked at home since dropping a 5-0 decision to Tennessee in the 2023 NCAA Super Regional on June 12.
