The Golden Eagles enter the contest eager to rebound from back-to-back conference setbacks and to build on the positives shown early in league play. Southern Miss earned its first Sun Belt win earlier this month in a 1-0 road victory at Troy, where Chloe Taylor netted the game-winner and goalkeeper Maddie Ellis tallied a career-high 12 saves for her first solo shutout of the year. That performance highlighted the team's defensive resilience and the ability of key veterans and freshmen alike to step up in crucial moments. At home on Sunday, USM will look to rediscover that formula and convert its chances against a challenging Monarchs side.
Old Dominion comes to Hattiesburg in solid form, carrying a 5-1-3 overall record and a 1-0-2 mark in Sun Belt play. The Monarchs have leaned on offensive spark from Riley Mullen, the league's Offensive Player of the Week earlier this month, and boast a balanced group that thrives in possession and on the counter. With a disciplined back line and a knack for finishing in transition, ODU has proven difficult to break down through the first half of the season and will look to extend its strong start on the road.
Sunday marks the eighth all-time meeting between Southern Miss and Old Dominion. The Monarchs hold a 5-1-1 advantage in the series, with the Golden Eagles' lone win coming in 2013, a 4-3 overtime thriller in Hattiesburg. The most recent matchup took place on Sept. 30, 2023, when ODU claimed a 4-0 victory.
