HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss soccer (5-4-2, 2-2 SBC) generated 16 shots and put eight on frame Saturday afternoon but came up short against Louisiana (9-2-2, 3-0-1 SBC), falling 2-0 at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles stayed aggressive throughout against a Ragin' Cajuns side that entered the weekend sixth nationally in goals scored.
Southern Miss created several early chances, with Ava Bynes forcing a save in the sixth minute and Maiko Kikuchi putting another effort on frame in the 13th. Louisiana broke through in the 15th minute on a goal from Miku Kurihara before Carson Glenn doubled the lead in the 35th. The Golden Eagles still finished the first half with an 8-7 edge in shots, a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks and 52 percent possession.
Olivia Tribolet sparked the Southern Miss attack after halftime, producing three shots in the opening five minutes of the second half and forcing a pair of saves. The Golden Eagles continued to push, earning three corners in a four-minute stretch and putting Louisiana under pressure despite trailing by two.
Southern Miss was reduced to 10 players in the 68th minute but did not allow another goal. Logan McGruder made six saves after halftime and finished with nine, while Tribolet led the Golden Eagles with six shots and four on goal. Bynes added four attempts, and Kikuchi put both of her shots on frame.
The 16-shot effort was Southern Miss' second-highest total in Sun Belt play this season, trailing only the 20 attempts against Louisiana Tech last week. Saturday also marked Louisiana's first win in Hattiesburg since 2015, ending a two-match Southern Miss home winning streak in the series that included victories in 2022 and 2024.
The result snapped Southern Miss' two-match winning streak, but the Golden Eagles have still won four of their last six as they move into the middle portion of the Sun Belt schedule.
