Quick’s Brace Leads Southern Miss Past Louisiana Tech

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss soccer (5-3-2, 2-1 SBC) picked up its second straight Sun Belt Conference victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Louisiana Tech (2-7-2, 0-2-1 SBC), 2-1, at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. Shaelynn Quick scored once in each half as the Golden Eagles won for the fourth time in their last five matches and secured their first home conference victory under Coach Danny Owens.

Southern Miss established itself in the attacking third early, producing three shots and two corner kicks inside the opening nine minutes. Quick had an early attempt turned away before the Golden Eagles broke through in the 10th minute. Argentina Estrada worked the ball forward from the back line and supplied Quick, who finished the chance for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.

The chances continued after the opener. Quick forced another save in the 17th minute, while Ava Bynes, Lorilee Taylor and Alessia Navarro were all involved in a Southern Miss attack that finished the opening half with 13 shots, six on goal and four corner kicks. Taylor nearly doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute but was denied by Mackenzie Lorkowski, and the Golden Eagles carried the one-goal lead into halftime.

Southern Miss immediately went back to work after the break. Taylor generated three attempts in the opening eight minutes of the second half, while Maiko Kikuchi forced another save in the 51st. Quick made the pressure count in the 54th minute, creating the opportunity herself and finishing for her second goal of the afternoon to extend the lead to 2-0.

The brace was the second of Quick's career and her first since scoring twice against Louisiana on Oct. 24, 2024. Her two goals Sunday moved her to four on the season, matching Bynes for the team lead. Quick finished with five shots and put four on frame, while Taylor remained a constant presence around the Louisiana Tech box with a match-high seven attempts and two shots on goal.

Louisiana Tech pulled one back through Caroline Martin in the 86th minute, but Southern Miss saw out the remaining time to secure all three points. Logan McGruder finished with five saves, while Estrada, Georgia Gray and Ella Jefcoat each played the full 90 minutes. Estrada's assist on the opening goal was her first point as a Golden Eagle.

The Golden Eagles finished with 20 shots, including 10 on goal, marking their highest shot total in a Sun Belt Conference match since joining the league. The performance also came within one attempt of the all-time high in a conference outing from the program's Conference USA era. Southern Miss recorded 21 shots against Louisiana Tech on Nov. 1, 2019, with that total coming across 95 minutes in an overtime match. Sunday's 20 attempts came in regulation.

Sunday also continued a turnaround in form for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles have now won four of their last five matches for the first time since the 2021 season, with victories over Southern, Nicholls, Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech during the current stretch. The wins over Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech also give Southern Miss consecutive Sun Belt victories for the first time since defeating Troy and Louisiana four days apart in October 2024.

The result added another piece of history to a series that dates back more than two decades. Southern Miss has now defeated Louisiana Tech in consecutive meetings after taking a 1-0 decision in Hattiesburg last season, marking the Golden Eagles' first back-to-back wins in the series since victories in 2006 and 2007.
