HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Braden Luke led Southern Miss in the first game with an eighth-inning, go-ahead double before Marshall registered a 6-0 shutout in the nightcap in splitting a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jack Cook Field.
The Golden Eagles (22-10 overall, 8-4 Sun Belt) dropped their first league series of the year as the final game of the set was pushed up to Saturday as part of the doubleheader due to expected rain in the area all day Sunday.
In the opening game, Southern Miss jumped out early with two runs. They took advantage of three walks and a hit in the second and collected both runs via wild pitches.
The Thundering Herd (16-16, 5-7) got one back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI groundout by Nolan Wilson.
Carson Paetow increased the lead to 3-1 on a third inning run-scoring double, before Marshall tied the game with two tallies in the bottom of the inning on sacrifice flies by both AJ Havrilla and Maika Niu.
The game stayed that way until the eighth. Drey Barrett opened the top of the eighth with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Ty Long came on to pinch run and scored on Luke's two-out double into the left-center gap.
Josh Och came in for relief for Kros Sivley in the fifth with one out and two runners on. Och got a ground-ball double play to get out of the frame and then retired the next 10 batters before giving up his lone hit, a single in the ninth, before retiring the final two batters to clinch the game. Och got the victory and improved to 2-0 as he threw a career-best 4 2/3 innings and tallied a career-high seven strikeouts.
Marshall reliever Charlie Krebs gave up a run on two hits with two walks and a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 2-1.
In the nightcap, the Herd jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third off starter Grayden Harris. Wilson got the home squad on the board with a two-run double. An RBI groundout by Cam Harthan finished the inning's scoring.
Tyler Kamerer added a run-scoring single in the fourth, before Niu added a two-run homer in the sixth, his third, to complete the scoring.
The Golden Eagles were limited to seven hits and two walks as Clint Moak threw a 112-pitch complete game, also collecting four strikeouts to improve to 1-1.
Harris gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
The Golden Eagles continue their eight-game road swing at Alabama Tuesday. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
