Ben Higdon had three hits and drove in four runs to lead No. 12 Southern Miss to a 10-5 Sun Belt Conference victory over James Madison Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park to complete a three-game sweep.
Â
The Golden Eagles (37-14 overall, 19-8 Sun Belt) won for the sixth-straight time and increased their winning streak in May regular season games to 17.
Â
Both Higdon and Davis Gillespie had three hits in the 10-hit Golden Eagle attack, while Joey Urban and Matthew Russo added two RBI.
Â
For third-straight day, the Golden Eagles scored first in the contest with a solo run in the second. Gillespie and Russo began things with consecutive singles. After a lineout to right to advance Gillespie to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Higdon.
Â
The Golden Eagles then broke open the game with a six-run fifth, by sending 11 batters to the plate. After a leadoff groundout, Southern Miss compiled three-straight singles by Higdon, Tucker Stockman and Ty Long. The one by Stockman drove in Higdon for the inning's first run.
Â
Seth Smith then put down a bunt that was thrown wide of first for an error to load the bases. Urban then plated his two RBI with a single up the middle, before Kyle Morrison hit a ball deep to center that was misplayed into a single which allowed a fourth run to score in the frame. After a flyout, Russo drove in his two runs with a double to left center to make the score 7-0.
Â
The Dukes (20-30, 10-17) closed the gap in the bottom of that frame with four runs of their own. They loaded things with three consecutive singles before Kyle Langley belted a grand slam off Golden Eagle starter Camden Sunstrom over the right field wall, his fourth homer of the year, to cut the gap.
Â
Higdon added to the lead with a three-run double high off the right field wall in the seventh to make the score 10-4, plating Gillespie, who singled, Russo, who was hit by a pitch, and Drey Barrett, who walked to reach base.
Â
JMU added its final tally in the ninth, scoring on a double play groundout.
Â
Sunstrom, who held the Dukes to two singles and a walk over the first four innings, recorded the victory as he went five-plus innings and allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 5-3. Both Josh Och and Thomas Crabtree threw two innings each to end the game.
Â
JMU starter Tyler Lutz (3-5) allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout to suffer the loss.
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action for their final series of the regular season starting Thursday at 7 p.m. at home against Georgia Southern.
