HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team entertains Sun Belt Conference foe Georgia Southern in its final regular season home series this weekend. The series opens at 7 p.m., Thursday, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
The Golden Eagles (37-14 overall, 19-8 Sun Belt) enter the weekend trailing Coastal Carolina by one game in the conference standings for first place. The Chanticleers finish their regular season at Louisiana this weekend.
Â
Already having clinched at least second place in next week's Sun Belt Tournament at DABOS Park in Montgomery, the Golden Eagles can reach a pair of milestones this weekend. One, they can capture at least 20 conference victories for the 10th consecutive season. They also can extend their streak of reaching 40 wins in a season for the 10-straight year, extending their longest current streak in Division I baseball. Should the Golden Eagles get to 40 wins this weekend, it would mark the second year in a row that they had accomplished that feat and the sixth time overall.
Â
Southern Miss currently enjoys a six-game winning streak and have captured 17 regular season games in a row in the month of May after sweeping James Madison on the road last weekend. The Golden Eagles are now 24-1 in May regular season contests under current coach Christian Ostrander.
Â
This weekend also marks senior weekend at The Pete and will mark the final home regular season appearances for eight Golden Eagles, including Colby Allen, JW Armistead, Ben Higdon, Kyle Morrison, Matthew Russo, Kros Sivley, Caleb Stelly and Joey Urban. All eight will be honored prior to Friday's 6 p.m. tilt.
Â
Two of those seniors, Higdon and Russo, have helped the Golden Eagle offense surge as of late.
Â
Higdon holds a .444 batting mark (16-for-36) over the last 10 games with seven runs, three doubles, a home run and 14 RBI, while Russo is hitting .400 over the last eight contests (12-for-30) with five doubles, a home run, 11 runs and seven RBI.
Four-year pitchers, Sivley and Allen, who have thrown in 97 and 88 games in their Golden Eagle careers, respectively, rank No. 3 and No. 6 on the school's appearance list. Allen also holds the No. 5 position for career saves at Southern Miss with 21 and his 22 wins over his tenure ties him for seventh.
Â
After defeating College of Charleston at home 9-5 Tuesday night, Georgia Southern enters the weekend at 16-37 and 7-20. They have been eliminated from reaching the 10-team field of next week's conference tournament.
Â
This will be the first meeting between the program since the Golden Eagles defeated Georgia Southern 14-11 in the 2024 Sun Belt Tournament title game. Overall, Southern Miss leads the overall series 8-3 dating back to the 2007 season.
Â
Following the Georgia Southern series, the Golden Eagles next play Wednesday at the league tournament in Montgomery at a time to be announced later this weekend.
