MONROE, La. – Carson Paetow belted two of his team's three home runs to help Southern Miss complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep with an eight-inning run-rule 14-2 victory over ULM Sunday afternoon at Lou St. Amant Field.
The Golden Eagles (18-6 overall, 5-1 Sun Belt) won for the fourth-straight contest and the ninth time over the last 10 games.
The Warhawks (9-14, 1-5) jumped out with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Bryce Blaser opened the frame by reaching via a throwing error by Ozzie Pratt at short. After a single by Henry Garcia and a sacrifice bunt, Jacob Billings knocked in the first run with an RBI groundout. The second run was scored on a throwing error by Seth Smith.
The game's momentum, though, changed in the third as the Golden Eagles put together two hits before Paetow homered to right to give the Golden Eagles the 3-2 lead.
The visitors increased their lead with a five-run fourth as Pratt collected a sacrifice fly, before Nick Monistere stroked a grand slam over the batter's eye in straight away center to make the score 8-2.
A two-run fifth behind a bases-loaded walk to Pratt and a sacrifice fly from Matthew Russo made the score 10-2.
Paetow's second homer of the game, another three-run shot, highlighted a four-run eighth that allowed the Golden Eagles to run-rule the Warhawks. Ty Long accounted for the other run with an RBI single. It was his first collegiate hit.
Paetow collected his third two-homer game of the year as he now has nine for the year. His career total now stands at 40, which moved him into 10th place tie with B.A. Vollmuth on the school's home run career chart.
Southern Miss pounded out a season-high tying 18 hits for the second time this weekend as Jake Cook led the way with three, increasing his team-best hitting streak to 11 games. Tucker Stockman also tallied three hits, while Russo added a pair of doubles, along with two hits each from Monistere, Paetow and Seth Smith.
Golden Eagle starter Grayden Harris (3-1) pitched six innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing two unearned runs on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts to earn the victory.
Daniel Gonzalez, the ULM starter, was touched for eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with one strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
Southern Miss finishes a stretch of five games away from home Tuesday when they take on Nicholls at Keesler Federal Ballpark in Biloxi. The game starts at 6 p.m., and the Golden Eagles are the designated home team.
