Baseball Finishes TCU Series with 11-3 Sunday Victory

FORT WORTH, Texas – Matthew Russo had three hits, including two homers, and drove in a career-high tying five runs to lead Southern Miss over TCU 11-3 Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium to win the non-conference road series.

The Golden Eagles (9-3) won for the second-straight time as they complete a five-game road swing Tuesday at Mississippi State.

The visitors jumped out early with three runs over the first two innings. After scoring a first inning run on a wild pitch, Russo started a two-run second with a leadoff homer to right. Tucker Stockman was then hit by a pitch. After going to second on a sacrifice, Jake Cook singled in Stockman.

Southern Miss added another run in the fifth to make the score 4-0. Cook started the frame by being hit by a pitch and then went to third on an errant pickoff throw at first and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ozzie Pratt, his third of the of weekend.

In the bottom half of the frame, TCU (7-4) put together three singles to load the bases off Golden Eagle starter Matthew Adams. An RBI groundout by Sawyer Strosnider tallied the first Horned Frogs run, before Sam Myers added a two-run double to cut the gap to 4-3.

Freshman left-hander Grayden Harris then got out of the fifth inning with a strikeout. Harris finished with 1 1/3 innings of work and gave up a walk and a hit to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Fellow freshman southpaw Brooks Willoughby allowed one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over the final three innings to earn the save.

The Golden Eagles broke open the game with five runs in the eighth, with Russo driving in the first two runs with a double. Stockman and then Seth Smith followed with RBI doubles of their own before Cook completed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Russo then ended the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth, his third of the year.

TCU starter Trever Baumler went four-plus innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 1-2.
