Baseball Falls at Mississippi State Wednesday Afternoon 18-3 in Run-Rule Contest

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Southern Miss pitching allowed a season-high for runs and hits as Mississippi State defeated the Golden Eagles 18-3 at Dudy Noble Field Wednesday afternoon in seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

The two teams split the two-game season series as the Golden Eagles (9-4) won 3-0 in Hattiesburg last month. It was the first time the two teams played at each other's campus since 1998 in the same season.

Eight Golden Eagle pitchers allowed 20 hits as the Bulldogs scored in five different innings, including four runs in both the fourth and fifth frames with a six-run sixth to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs (8-4) collected five home runs including two from Nolan Stevens, with one each from Bryce Chance Ace Reese and Noah Sullivan. Reese drove in four runs on three hits, while Sullivan had three RBI on four hits and Stevens enjoyed three RBI on three hits.

Mississippi State reliever Chase Hungate (1-0) threw 2 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing no runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory.

Golden Eagle reliever Chandler Best (0-1), the second of the eight pitchers, allowed two runs on three hits with a walk over two innings to suffer the loss.

Carson Paetow led the Golden Eagles with an RBI double, his team-leading eighth of the year, while Tucker Stockman added a sacrifice fly and Jake Cook an RBI groundout for the visitors scoring.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday when they open up a seven-game homestand with a weekend series with UNCW. The opener is set for 6 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
