HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss baseball looks to finish its current five-game road swing over .500 when it concludes at Dudy Noble Stadium/Polk-Dement Field Wednesday afternoon against Mississippi State in a 4 p.m., non-conference game.
The game can be seen at SECN-Plus, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles (9-3) opened this swing last Tuesday dropping a midweek tilt at Ole Miss, before falling in the opening game of a weekend series at TCU. Southern Miss then responded with two wins over the No. 19 Horned Frogs to give them their fifth road non-conference three-game set win over the last six dating back to 2021.
Mississippi State enters with a 7-4 mark after dropping two of three contests at the Astros Foundation College Classic last weekend. They defeated Rice 14-3 in seven innings, before falling to Arizona (6-5) and Oklahoma State (9-7).
Southern Miss travels to Starkville for the first time since 2019, when the two schools played a three-game series there. This will be the second meeting between the schools this season, after the Golden Eagles captured a 3-0 victory at Pete Taylor Park last month. The game in Starkville marks the first time the two schools will have played on each other's campus since the 1998 campaign.
Through Monday's games, the Golden Eagles currently ranked in the Top 20 nationally in two team offensive categories, including second in sacrifice flies (12), along with being No. 18 in doubles (30). On the pitching side, the Golden Eagles are seventh in shutouts (2). Two players ranked at the top of the NCAA statistics, including JB Middleton in ERA with a 0.00, while Ozzie Pratt's six sacrifice flies rank him by himself at the top. Davis Gillespie ranks No. 7 in sacrifice flies with three and Carson Paetow is No. 10 in doubles (7).
One player off a solid weekend is Matthew Russo, nicknamed Bull, who went 5-for-9 (.556) with a double, a triple and two home runs with four runs scored and five RBI against TCU. In the opener, he collected his first career triple before having his big day in the finale in which he collected a two-run double and homered twice in an 11-3 win over the then No. 19 Horned Frogs. Russo also hit a solo homer at Ole Miss earlier in the week.
Following the Mississippi State game, Southern Miss starts a seven-game homestand starting Friday at 6 p.m., against UNCW.
