HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Davis Gillespie had three hits and drove in two runs while Billy Oldham limited Coastal Carolina to four hits over seven innings in leading Southern Miss to a Sun Belt Conference series-opening 7-2 victory Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (29-17 overall, 13-9 Sun Belt) banged out 15 hits as Dalton McIntyre added three as well, along with two apiece from Ozzie Pratt, Slade Wilks, Nick Monistere and Matthew Russo.
Oldham gave up two runs over seven innings and fanned a career-high 11 batters with just a pair of walks allowed to earn the victory and improve to 6-1. After allowing two runners on with a pair of outs in the fifth in a 2-2 affair, he got a strikeout to end the inning and went on to retire the final seven batters he faced with five strikeouts during that stretch.
The Chanticleers (27-18, 11-11) opened the scoring with a run in the second. Caden Bodine, who had two of CCU's four hits, opened the frame with a double to center. He went to third on a groundout, before scoring on a Zack Beach groundout for the early lead.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a Monistere home run to left, his eighth of the season.
Southern Miss then took the lead in the third on a Wilks single up the middle, plating McIntyre who doubled two batters earlier.
A Bodine homer to center in the fourth, his fifth of the year, tied the game at 2-2, before Southern Miss tallied the final five runs of the contest.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the fifth with a pair of runs. After a strikeout to open the frame, McIntrye single and then scored from first on a Pratt double. Pratt later scored on a Gillespie double to make the score 4-2.
With two outs in the seventh, Southern Miss added to its lead with two additional runs. After a Gillespie single and a Carson Paetow walk, Monistere drove in the first run with a single down the third-base line, before Russo added an RBI single of his own.
Gillespie then knocked in the final run, McIntyre again scoring from first after singling, with an RBI double in the eighth.
Riley Eikhoff (5-1) gave up four runs on 10 hits with no walks and five strikeouts to suffer the loss. He was the first of five Chanticleer pitchers.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2 p.m.
