Southern Miss Wins Coastal Carolina Series with 7-3 Triumph Saturday Afternoon

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Paetow and Ozzie Pratt homered while Niko Mazza registered 6 1/3 strong innings on the mound to lead Southern Miss to a 7-3 series-clinching victory over Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (30-17 overall, 14-9 Sun Belt) registered their Division I current longest streak of 22, 30-plus win seasons.
Down 2-0 in the third, the Golden Eagles exploded for five runs to take the lead for good. The nine-hole hitter, Gabe Broadus, opened the frame with a single up the middle. Dalton McIntyre followed with a double down the first-base line to plate Broadus from first. McIntyre then scored two batters later via a Slade Wilks single. Wilks extended his hitting streak to a current team-best 20 games. After a walk to Davis Gillespie, Carson Paetow blasted a three-run homer to right-center to give the Golden Eagles a 5-2 advantage.
Pratt homered to open the fifth for his third of year, before the Golden Eagles finished their scoring one inning later when Pratt knocked in Broadus with a single to right. Broadus had reached on a two-out hit by pitch.
The Chanticleers (27-19, 11-12) got all three of their runs courtesy of Graham Brown, who doubled in two runs in the third and singled in their final run in the seventh.
Mazza limited CCU to three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames. He earned the victory and improved to 7-3.
Chandler Best came in for Mazza with two on and two outs in the seventh and got a flyout to end the threat. He threw another scoreless frame, before Colby Allen came on and threw a scoreless ninth.
CCU starter Bryce Shaffer gave up five runs on five hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts over three innings to suffer the loss and fall to 1-5.
The final game of the series takes place at 11 a.m., Sunday. The game was moved up two hours to accommodate the Chanticleers travel plans.
