HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss concludes a four-game homestand this weekend when they entertain Coastal Carolina for a three-game Sun Belt Conference set at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
The Golden Eagles (28-17 overall, 12-8 Sun Belt) are tied for third place in the league standings with Georgia Southern, while the Chanticleers (27-17, 11-9) are a game-back of the Golden Eagles and are in a three-way tie for sixth with James Madison and Old Dominion. This will be the first trip to Hattiesburg for the 2016 national champion.
Â
With 10 games left to play in the regular season, the Golden Eagles play seven at home down the stretch with just three road tilts remaining. Following this weekend, Southern Miss travels to Arkansas State next weekend before the final week of the regular season has them hosting both Ole Miss (Tue., May 14), and Texas State, Thursday through Saturday that week.
Â
For the second time in the last three games, Gabe Broadus delivered a late go-ahead single to lead Southern Miss to a 5-4 comeback victory over New Orleans Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth, as right-handed reliever Colby Allen also shut down the Privateers over the final two innings.
Â
The game marked the 11th one-run game this season for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss now has a 6-5 record in those contests and are 10-8 in games decided by one or two runs in 2024.
Â
Golden Eagle Slade Wilks currently holds a career-best hitting streak total at 18 games. He is hitting .343 (24x70) over this span with five doubles, a triple, five home runs and 20 RBI. His hitting streak is just three games out of a five-way tie for ninth place, which includes Chase Scott (2015), Isaac Rodriguez (2013), Taylor Walker (2009), Beau Griffin (2005) and Jeremy Albritton (1997). The school record for a hitting streak is 41 games set by Todd Nace during the 1991 campaign.
Â
Golden Eagle Athletics ask fans to make sure they know the Sunday contest has been moved up two hours to 11 a.m., to accommodate the Chanticleers travel plans.
Â
All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through the website at SouthernMiss.com.
