NEW ORLEANS – Nick Monistere had four hits and drove in four runs to lead Southern Miss to an 11-6 non-conference baseball victory over Tulane Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (26-15) opened their four-game road swing with their sixth-straight victory over the Green Wave (22-19). Southern Miss travels to face Sun Belt Conference leader Louisiana in Lafayette this weekend.
Monistere led the 15-hit Golden Eagle attack as Southern Miss recorded 10 or more hits for the 12-straight time. Gabe Broadus added three hits for the visitors, while Davis Gillespie and Carson Paetow added two each. Slade Wilks also extended his current team-best, career-long hitting streak to 14 games with a first-inning single.
The Golden Eagles trailed 4-2 in the fifth when they exploded for three runs. With the bases loaded, Monistere doubled down the left field line to tie the score before Broadus drove home the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk.
Southern Miss went on to score two runs more runs in each of the next three innings to pull away in the contest.
Cole Boswell, the third of five Golden Eagle pitchers, limited the Green Wave to two hits over 1 2/3 innings to earn the victory and improve to 1-0.
Tulane reliever Logan Hurd gave up a run on a hit and two walks without collecting an out to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Both teams traded a pair of runs in the opening inning, before Tulane registered single tallies in the third and fourth frames.
The Golden Eagles and Ragin' Cajuns open their series Friday with a 6 p.m. contest.
