LAFAYETTE, La. – Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year Kyle DeBarge connected on a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to lead Louisiana to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Southern Miss in a conference series opener Friday night at Russo Park.
The Golden Eagles (26-16 overall, 11-8 Sun Belt Conference) got a brilliant performance from starting pitcher Billy Oldham who limited the Ragin' Cajuns (32-12, 16-3) to just five hits and a walk over seven-plus innings. He also fanned a career-high 10 batters.
After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the third with a popout to short and just a one-out single in the fourth, Oldham retired the next eight batters. He then gave up a leadoff double in the seventh but posted three straight strikeouts to get out of the frame.
Oldham then went back out to start the eighth up 2-0, but he hit the first batter and gave up an infield single as the Cajuns beat the Golden Eagle infield shift. Southern Miss then called on Kros Sivley with two one and no one out. Sivley immediately got a comebacker to the mound, and he threw over to first for the first out of the inning. That brought up DeBarge. After falling behind 2-0, Sivley worked the count to 2-2, before DeBarge smashed a pitch over the left field wall that proved to be the game winner.
Sivley took the loss throwing the final inning and giving up a run on two hits with a strikeout to fall to 2-4.
The Golden Eagles initially jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Dalton McIntyre opened the game with an infield single. After a popout, Slade Wilks took a 1-0 pitch from UL starter Andrew Hermann and went deep over the right field wall.
The homer was the 10th of the year for the Golden Eagle and 42nd of his career to tie him for eighth on the school's chart, tying him with Dusty Haley (1997-2001). The hit also extended Wilks' career-best hitting streak to 15 games.
Herrman, though, allowed just four more hitters to reach base for the Golden Eagles as he retired 12 in a row at one point in the contest. He allowed a walk in the second, two walks in the sixth – one intentional – and a single to Gabe Broadus in the eighth for the only Southern Miss base runners of the night.
Herrmann improved to 5-2 win the win as he fanned seven and walked three. LP Langevin faced three batters in the ninth, with two strikeouts, to earn his sixth save.
The series continues with a 2 p.m., contest Saturday.
