HATTIESBURG, Miss. – ULM scored all its runs over the final three innings as the Warhawks salvaged the final game of the Sun Belt Conference series in defeating Southern Miss 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles (25-15 overall, 12-6 Sun Belt), while the Warhawks (18-21, 6-12) snapped a current four-game losing streak as well as nine-game skid to Southern Miss.
The game stayed scoreless until the fifth as it turned out to be pitcher's duel pitcher starting pitchers Daniel Gonzalez for ULM and Niko Mazza for Southern Miss.
Gonzalez went four innings and allowed just two hits to the Golden Eagles and fanned one as he did not figure in the decision of the contest.
The Golden Eagles, though, greeted reliever Paker Seay with its only run in the fifth.
Carson Paetow and Billy Butler delivered back-to-back doubles to open the inning with the second two-base hit driving in the run. Paetow, Matthew Russo and Gabe Broadus all had two hits to lead the 10-hit Golden Eagle attack as they registered at least 10 hits for the 11-straight game.
Mazza cruised through six shutout innings, before allowing a one-out walk and hit by pitch in the seventh to end his outing. The first ULM hitter from reliever Kros Sivley, Colby Lunsford, hit a comebacker to Sivley who after initialing misplaying the ball tried to flip it to first but went wildly allowing the first run to score.
A sacrifice fly by Jake Haggard gave the Warhawks the lead for good, before Matt Abshire doubled in the third tally of the frame for a 3-1 advantage.
A Shawn Weatherbee RBI double extended the lead in the eighth, before the visitors plated their final run in the ninth on a single by Bryce Blaser.
Mazza gave up two unearned runs on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 6-3.
Seay got the victory and upped his record to 3-1 by allowing a run on three hits over two innings with a strikeout. Orton fired the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit, to earn his second save.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they travel to Tulane, Tuesday, for a 6:30 p.m., contest.
