HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team concludes a stretch of seven of eight games on the road, its longest stretch away from home for the season, when they travel to Georgia State this weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. The series opens Friday at 5 p.m. CT at the Georgia State Baseball Complex in Decatur, Ga.
Â
All three games can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 21-12 overall record and are tied for second with Georgia Southern in the league standings at 8-4. The Panthers, who won at Jacksonville State Wednesday afternoon 8-5, are now 16-16 overall and trail the Golden Eagles by a game in the standings at 7-5.
Â
The Golden Eagles are 2-2 on the road during this current road stretch and won their only home game over this span with a 5-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana, Tuesday. With 22 games left in the regular season, Southern Miss plays 12 games at home and 10 games away from home down the stretch.
Â
This weekend's trip marks the first to Metro Atlanta since the 2011 NCAA Georgia Tech Regional, in which the Golden Eagles went 0-2 in that tournament. Southern Miss also played in the 2009 Georgia Tech Regional, which Georgia State was also involved but the two teams did not meet. The Golden Eagles won that tournament and went on to their lone CWS appearance that June.
Â
Four Southern Miss pitchers limited Southeastern Louisiana to a single tally as the Golden Eagles captured a 5-1 non-conference victory Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park in their last outing. Chandler Best threw 2 1/3 scoreless relief innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts to record the victory.
Â
Southern Miss has scored 43 of its 209 runs in the opening frame this season, good for 20.6 percent of its scoring production. The Golden Eagles have scored in the opening inning in 18 of 33 games this season and are 13-5 in those contests.
Â
Following this weekend, the Golden Eagles return home Tuesday when they take on Nicholls for the first of a four-game homestand. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
