HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team welcomes Sun Belt Conference foe Troy for an Easter Weekend series, starting Thursday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The series opens with a 6 p.m. contest and runs through Saturday.
Â
All three games can be viewed via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com
Â
The Troy series completes a four-game homestand for the Golden Eagles (16-9 overall, 4-2 Sun Belt) which started with a 9-7 Tuesday night victory over Tulane. The Golden Eagles look to rebound at home in league play after dropping a series at Georgia Southern last weekend. It was the first league series loss for the Golden Eagles since dropping two of three at Coastal Carolina last April and only the third in 12 Sun Belt series since joining the league in 2023.
Â
In the Tulane victory Carson Paetow had three hits and drove in three runs, coming up just a triple shy of the cycle in the contest. With the score tied at 2-2 in the fifth, the Golden Eagles broke open the game by tallying four runs. Nick Monistere, who hit a grand slam here last season against Tulane to put the team ahead in that contest, doubled on a high chop over the third baseman's head to knock in a pair of go-ahead runs en route to the victory.Â
Â
Troy (17-9, 3-3) makes its first trip to Hattiesburg since the 2019 season when the Golden Eagles triumphed 12-2 in a non-conference midweek contest. Gabe Shepard fanned nine over five innings and the Golden Eagles pounded out 16 hits that evening as the Golden Eagles also broke open a reasonably close contest with seven combined runs over the sixth and seventh innings to run away with the victory.
Â
Six of the last 10 games between the two clubs, of which Southern Miss enjoys a 22-13 advantage in the overall series, have been played in Troy, with two more taking place in Montgomery. The 2020 Montgomery tilt was the final contest before COVID ended the college baseball season. Reed Trimble knocked in six in that game as the Golden Eagles rallied from a 7-2 deficit to take a 9-7 decision.
Â
Southern Miss also went 3-1 against Troy last season, taking two-of-three games at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy before also taking a 5-4 decision in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Montgomery. Danny Lynch delivered the game-winning single in the ninth, scoring Slade Wilks in that tournament tilt. The win was the seventh for the Golden Eagles over the last nine tries with the Trojans.
Â
Following the Troy series, the Golden Eagles take to the road again as they face Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond for a 6 p.m. affair.
