HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carson Paetow had three hits and Southern Miss scored four times in the first inning to ride to a 6-2 series-clinching victory over Indiana State Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 8-3 as they go after their first three-game sweep of the season, Sunday, in a 1 p.m. game. The Sycamores fell to 7-3, dropping their third game in a row.
After Southern Miss starting pitcher Billy Oldham struck out the side to open the game, the Golden Eagles jumped out front with four runs in their half of the first.
Dalton McIntrye opened the inning with an infield single and then went to third on an Ozzie Pratt single through the right side. Slade Wilks, who doubled twice in the game, got his first one which drove in the game's first two runs. Paetow then added a one-out infield single, before Matthew Russo was hit by a pitch. Seth Smith increased the lead to 3-0 by knocking in a run on a fielder's choice before Paetow later scored on a balk.
Oldham then continued to carve up the Sycamores as he faced the minimum through three innings, only hitting a batter that was later thrown out on a pitch in the dirt to end the second.
Indiana State finally got to Oldham in the fourth with both their runs. After a leadoff single by Dominic Listi, he went to third on a Oldham wild pitch and then scored on a groundout by Connor Hicks. A walk and subsequent stolen base by Luis Hernandez led to the second run via an RBI single by Adam Pottinger.
Oldham, who got the victory and improved to 2-0, gave up the two runs on three hits, with a pair of walks, a hit batter and seven strikeouts over five innings of work. Colby Allen then threw three scoreless innings, scattering three hits and posting one strikeout before JB Middleton retired all three batters he faced in the ninth.
The Golden Eagles, which registered 10 hits, added solo runs in the seventh and eighth innings to help pull away in the game. Paetow collected his second homer of the year in the seventh, a solo shot, before Nick Monistere collected an RBI double in the eighth.
Luke Hayden, who started for Indiana State, gave up four runs over 3 1/3 innings on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 1-1.
