Indiana State Uses Five-Run First to Win Series Finale 12-5 Sunday

The Golden Eagles fell to 8-4, while the Sycamores improved to 8-3.
The Sycamores jumped out to an early lead with five runs off Golden Eagle starter Will Armistead. Randal Diaz doubled on the game's first pitch and scored one batter later when Dominic Listi singled. After back-to-back hit by pitches, Stinson hit a grand slam to give the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
An RBI single from Grant Magill and a sacrifice fly from Randal Diaz in the fourth increased the Indiana State lead to 7-0.
Armistead went on to throw three-plus innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up seven runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks to suffer the loss to fall to 0-1.
The Golden Eagles got on the board for the first time in the fourth with three runs. Billy Butler opened the frame with his first Southern Miss home run to center, before Nick Monistere added an RBI single and Tucker Stockman a sacrifice fly to cut the gap to 7-3.
The two teams traded home runs in the sixth – one from pinch hitter Mike Sears for his second of the year for INS with Monistere adding his second in the bottom of the frame – to make the score 8-4.
An RBI single by Dalton McIntyre in the eighth cut the gap to 8-5, but a four-run ninth for the Sycamores pushed the final gap. The big blow in the final frame was a two-run double by Adam Pottinger.
INS reliever Jared Spencer (2-0) threw 2 1/3 innings and gave up a run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts to earn the victory.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Pearl, Miss., to face Mississippi State (8-4) at Trustmark Park, and will be the designated home team. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
