HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ethan Lege had two hits and drove in three runs to lead No. 17 Ole Miss over No. 25 Southern Miss 8-3 Tuesday Night at Trustmark Park.
The Golden Eagles (14-7) had a four-game winning streak snapped with the loss while Ole Miss improved to 16-6 on the year.
After giving up a pair of runs to the Rebels in the opening frame, the Golden Eagles took the lead with three runs in the second. Carson Paetow reached on a fielding error by the Rebel third baseman and ended up at second. After a groundout to move Paetow to third, Pratt singled in a run before scoring on a Gabe Broadus fielder's choice. Dalton McIntyre then ended on an infield single that scored Tucker Stockman.
The Rebels then scored twice in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, the last two runs coming on Lege's sixth homer of the year, which was a two-run shot.
Ole Miss starter Riley Maddox went six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts to get the victory and improve to 2-1. Peyton Lacy, the fifth of seven Golden Eagle pitchers, allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and a strikeout to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Pratt lead the Golden Eagles with two hits, extending his hitting streak to seven games.
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they travel Georgia Southern for Sun Belt Conference play. The series starts Friday with a 5:30 p.m. CT game.
