HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 22 ranked Southern Miss baseball team plays their first true road game of the 2023 season when they travel to North Mississippi to face in-state foe Ole Miss Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (8-3) swept Dallas Baptist over the weekend, while the Rebels (10-2) come off a successful weekend in Minneapolis, winning games over Maryland, Minnesota and Nebraska. The game can be seen on the SEC Network+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Ole Miss game starts a string of five of the next eight games on the road for Southern Miss. After the game in Oxford, Southern Miss returns home for the fourth-straight weekend in 2023 to entertain Valparaiso for a three-game set. They then go on the road to face Southeastern Louisiana during the midweek, before heading to Texas State for its first-ever Sun Belt Conference series. They end the stretch March 21 at New Orleans. Southern Miss does not play at home during the midweek again until April 4 versus SLU.
Â
The Golden Eagles outscored Dallas Baptist, 13-6, last weekend in sweeping the Patriots at Pete Taylor Park. The first two games were decided by a run, but Southern Miss used a pair of two-run homers from Christopher Sargent on Sunday for a five-run victory. It was the second three-game sweep for the Golden Eagles this season and the first time DBU had been swept on the road in three games since losing at Clemson, Feb. 23-24, 2018.
Â
In the DBU series, Southern Miss hit at least one home run in every game, including one from Slade Wilks who led the way with a .500 average (5x10) including a double, a home run and two RBI. Reece Ewing's two-run homer on Saturday were the only runs scored for Southern Miss in the 2-1 victory.
Â
Southern Miss also stole three bases and now have 13 for the season. The team did not register its first stolen base last year until the 13th game of the year.
Â
The trio of weekend starting pitchers picked up wins in the series and each recorded their first quality start of the year. It marked the first quality starts for Southern Miss pitching this season. The bullpen also did its job by not allowing a run over 7 2/3 innings and limited DBU to one hit and one walk with nine strikeouts. Reliever Justin Storm registered back-to-back saves to open the series.
Â
Senior first baseman Christopher Sargent, who entered Sunday's game with a .086 batting average (3x35), belted a pair of two-run home runs, his first two of the season. It was Sargent's seventh career multi-homer game (5-2 homer, 2-3 homer, which ties a school record) of his three-year Golden Eagle career. He now has 39 round-trippers for his career, which ranked tied for ninth on the Southern Miss career charts with Derek Reams (1994-96).
Â
The Valparaiso series opens at Pete Taylor Park, Friday, at 6 p.m.
