OXFORD, Miss. – No. 4 Ole Miss belted three home runs to beat No. 22 Southern Miss 11-5 Tuesday night at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The Golden Eagles (8-4) had a three-game winning streak snapped, while the Rebels improved to 11-2 on the season.
Southern Miss plated the game's first run in the opening frame. With one out, Dustin Dickerson went the other way with a single through the right side. Tate Parker then walked. After a strikeout and a hit batsman, Blake Johnson's grounder to third was misplayed which allowed Dickerson to score.
The Rebels, though, took the lead for good in the second on a pair of solo home runs from Anthony Calarco, his second, and Peyton Chatagnier, his fourth.
Ole Miss extended the lead in the third with another run. After loading the base on a pair of walks and a hit batsman, reliever Tyler Martin balked to allow the runner at third to score.
A four-run fourth expanded the Rebels lead as Ole Miss got an RBI single by Ethan Lege, before Ethan Groff knocked home a run with a double and Calvin Harris completed the scoring in the frame with a two-run single.
The game then went 8-1 in the fifth as TJ McCants hit his third homer of the year to right.
Southern Miss got back into the game in the fifth by batting around and scoring four runs. Carson Paetow opened the frame with a solo homer to right, his first of the year. The Golden Eagles then followed with Blake Johnson reaching on a hit by pitch, before Lynch reached on a fielding error by the Ole Miss first baseman.
After a popout, Creek Robertson singled to center to plate a run before Matthew Etzel singled in a run of his own. Dustin Dickerson completed the scoring with an RBI double. The Golden Eagles had a chance to score additional runs with the bases loaded but Slade Wilks tapped one to the pitcher that resulted in a double play to end the threat.
The Rebels, though, increased their lead to 9-5 as they bunched together three singles, the last coming from Calarco to knock in a run.
A two-run seventh for Ole Miss increased their advantage with an RBI single from Gonzalez and a sacrifice fly from Ethan Groff.
UM starter JT Quinn went four innings and allowed an unearned run on three hits with two walks and one strikeout to earn the victory and improve to 3-0, while Southern Miss starter Colby
Allen (0-1) suffered the loss by giving up two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts over two innings of work.
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend when they entertain Valparaiso in a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The Friday game time is 6 p.m.
