HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Christopher Sargent collected a pair of two-run home runs to lead Southern Miss to a 7-2 victory over Dallas Baptist Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, completing a three-game weekend sweep.
The Golden Eagles improved to 8-3 and return to the road for a midweek matchup, Tuesday, at Ole Miss. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. The Patriots lost for the fourth-straight time to fall to 7-4.
It didn't take long for Southern Miss to get on the board as they jumped out early with a solo run in the first.
Matthew Etzel and Dustin Dickerson opened the bottom of the first with singles. After a strikeout, Slade Wilks drove in Etzel with a single of his own through the left side. Carson Paetow followed with a line shot between first and second but struck Wilks running and was called out due to that contact. The next batter grounded out to second, spoiling at least one extra run for the home team in the frame.
The Golden Eagles, though, increased their lead behind Sargent with a two-run homer in each of the second and fourth innings to increase the advantage to 5-0. Those blasts were the first two homers of the season for Sargent, who collected his seventh multi-homer game with the school. He now has 39 round-trippers in three seasons, tying him for ninth on the school's career chart.
DBU collected both of their runs in the fifth. After a leadoff double to George Specht, starter Niko Mazza got a strikeout before Nate Rombach reached on a fielding error. After a walk, Miguel Santos singled in the first run and the second one was tallied one batter later on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Mann.
Mazza went on throw six strong innings to get the victory and improve to 2-1 as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. DBU transfer Luke Trahan then went 1 1/3 scoreless innings, before Chase Adams got two outs and JB Middleton threw a clean ninth to finish the contest.
Up 5-2, the Golden Eagles added two more runs in the eighth. Paetow and Blake Johnson led off the frame with walks. After a wild pitch to move each runner up a base, Danny Lynch plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, while Creek Robertson finished the scoring with an RBI single through the right side.
DBU starter Bryson Hammer (2-1) gave up five runs on eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts to suffer the loss.
Sargent, Dickerson and Wilks each collected two hits in the Golden Eagle 10-hit attack.
