HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Danny Lynch's 10th-inning bloop single to right scored Christopher Sargent to lift No. 7 Southern Miss to a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to salvage the final game of a Conference USA series.
The Golden Eagles (36-12 overall, 18-6 C-USA) enjoyed their third walk-off winning hit of 2022 and 23rd since the start of the 2017 campaign as it also marked Lynch's second game-winning hit of the year. His other came on a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth, March 18, against Florida Atlantic.
"Today was about the mental challenge," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "It was about mentally having yourself able to compete and overcome two tough losses and stuff not going in our way.
"You can either be down about it or you can gather your thought and get yourself ready mentally to compete. That was the message to the guys in the pregame to salvage the win. I think that's exactly
what they did."
Landon Harper threw four strong relief innings after a six-inning start from Hurston Waldrep. Harper's only blemish was a solo home run by Thomas Wheeler with a solo homer off the video board in left center with two outs in the ninth.
Harper allowed three hits and walked one with six strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 2-1. Waldrep allowed three runs and on five hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts over his start.
With the score tied in the 10th, Christopher Sargent reached on a third baseman Kenny Levari throwing error with one out. Will McGillis then dinked an opposite field double to right to put runners at second and third before Lynch's game-winning hit.
The Monarchs (31-13, 13-11) jumped out on Waldrep with a run in the first. After giving up a walk, a single and another walk, ODU scored the game's first run on a one-out Brock Gagliardi sacrifice fly. Gagliardi extended the ODU in the fourth with a two-run home run, his eighth of the year.
Southern Miss cut into the deficit with a two-out, two-run homer from Will McGillis to left, tying the team high for most home runs with 14.
Two innings later the Golden Eagles tied the game. After a team-leading 18th double from Dustin Dickerson, Sargent dropped a hit to left to plate the tying run.
Southern Miss then went ahead in the seventh as Dickerson drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.
ODU reliever Brett Smith (0-2) gave up an unearned run in the 10th on two hits with a strikeout in a third of the inning to suffer the loss.
Golden Eagle pitching finished with 16 strikeouts, marking the 10th time this season that they squad posted 15 or more punchouts in a game and the 35th time they registered 10 or more.
The Golden Eagles return home, Wednesday, May 11, when they entertain in-state foe Ole Miss in a sold-out game. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
