HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 11 ranked Southern Miss baseball team returns home for the only time in a nine-game stretch when they play host to Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (23-8) started that stretch last week by winning in Pearl against Ole Miss, before sweeping a three-game set at Charlotte last weekend. Southern Miss has now won five-straight games and 13 of their last 15 contests. After winning two of three games at home over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Lions head to Hattiesburg with a 13-19 mark.
Southern Miss met the Lions once last season and SLU captured a 5-3 win in Hattiesburg. That snapped a two-game winning streak by the Golden Eagles.
This will be the 125th meeting between the two schools in baseball dating back to 1948 with the Golden Eagles holding a 75-49 advantage.
Offensively, Slade Wilks leads the Golden Eagle offense with a .342 batting average to go along with 14 doubles, a triple and six home runs as well as 23 RBI. Shortstop Dustin Dickerson is next at. 339, while Reece Ewing is hitting .292 and Will McGillis .290. While he has not had enough at bats to qualify among the leaders, Blake Johnson has hit .348 in limited action with nine RBI in seven games played.
The Golden Eagles continue to use the long ball as their top offensive weapon, having hit 28 of their team's 38 total over the last 15 contests. Christopher Sargent leads the team with nine and five Southern Miss players at least homers to their credit this season.
Against SLU, the Golden Eagles are set to go with sophomore right-hander Tyler Stuart, who will be making his third start of the year. The Kankakee, Ill., native has posted a 2-0 record this season with a 2.92 ERA.
Following the SLU contest, Southern Miss takes to the road to face FIU in a C-USA series set to run from Thursday-Saturday.
