
Southern Miss Set to Take on Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday

The Golden Eagles are currently riding a three-game winning streak
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Fresh off of a 4-3 victory over SWAC opponent, Grambling State on Friday night, the Southern Miss soccer team will return to the state of Louisiana on Sunday when they travel to Hammond, La. for a match against the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) are currently riding a three-game winning streak and will look to extend their streak to four games with a win over Southeastern Louisiana.
Southern Miss currently leads C-USA in three offensive categories, goals (18), goals per game (4.50) and points per game (11.25). The Golden Eagles are also tied with Louisiana Tech as the conference leader in points (45). Â
After cruising to 7-0 victories in their previous two games, the Golden Eagles had to dig in and show some resiliency on Friday night to come away with a 4-3 victory against Grambling State.
Four Golden Eagles contributed to the scoring in Friday night's contest. Senior defender Ashton Stennis, sophomore midfielders JoAnnie Ramos and Miah Zuazua and senior midfielder Hannah Abrams all found a way to get a shot past the Grambling State goalkeeper. For Abrams, her goal in the final minutes of play, which proved to be a difference maker in the game, was her first goal of the 2018 season. Ramos was also credited with an assist on the goal scored by Stennis in the first half of play and is now tied with Zuazua as the team leader in assists (3). Â Â
The Southeastern Louisiana Lions (2-1-1) will host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in what will be the second home match of the season for the Lions. The Lions led by second year head coach Christopher McBride have secured victories against SWAC opponents, Alcorn State University and Southern University. The Lions' two losses occurred against South Alabama in their season opener and in a road contest against North Texas on August 24th. Southeastern tied their match against Louisiana Lafayette 1-1 in Lafayette, La. on Friday night. Â
Southern Miss and Southeastern Louisiana have squared off against one another a total of 10 times on the pitch. Southern Miss leads the series (8-1-1). The Golden Eagles sport an all-time undefeated home record (5-0-0) against the Lions and are (3-1-1) when facing the Lions on the road.
The last meeting between the two schools took place on September 7, 2014 at Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions came away with a narrow 2-1 victory over the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles will look to continue their hot streak and avenge their 2014 loss when they take the field against the Lions at Strawberry Stadium at 5:00 p.m. (CT) in Hammond, La. Â Â
