The Golden Eagles are now riding a four-game winning streak
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (4-1) defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (2-2-1) by a final score of 1-0 in a hard-fought battle at Strawberry Park in Hammond, La. on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's win marks the fourth win for the Golden Eagles in their last four contests.  Â
Much like the match against Grambling State, Sunday's match proved to be a tough 90 minute contest as both teams fought hard until the end of the match.
It was no surprise that Southern Miss sophomore midfielder Miah Zuazua manufactured the lone goal of the match. Zuazua's goal came with 16:45 left to play in the first half when she drilled a lined shot to the top left corner of the goal, passed the outstretched hands of Southeastern Louisiana goalkeeper Nadine Maher to put the Golden Eagles on top 1-0. The Dallas, TX native has now recorded a total of six goals on the season and is C-USA's top goal scorer. Zuazua has now recorded at least one goal in each of the Golden Eagles' last four contests.
Although Zuazua produced the offense for the Golden Eagles, give credit to the Golden Eagles defense as well. Goalkeepers Kendell Mindnich and Sarah Preston saved their fair share of shots to keep the Lions off of the scoreboard and the stout group of defenders led by seniors Ashton Stennis and Ola Akinniyi won the battles in the trenches, clearing multiple balls throughout the contest.
Southern Miss head soccer coach Mohammed El-Zare on back-to-back victories over the weekend
"Our team showed discipline and resiliency over the weekend and that resulted in two wins for us. We were able to get two positive results on the road. We played in difficult conditions but that is why we set up our schedule the way that we did, for our players to experience that before entering conference play. Looking forward, we need to work on being more consistent as the season goes on."
El-Zare on the Golden Eagles' four-game winning streak
"I attribute our four-game winning streak to the resiliency and leadership of our upperclassmen and the youthful energy of our younger players. The seniors have done a really good job of integrating everybody as a unit."
The Golden Eagles will now take advantage of four days without games before taking on Southland Conference opponent, Stephen F. Austin (2-3) on Friday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. (CT) at SFA Soccer Field in Nacogdoches, TX.
