
Southern Miss Edges Out Grambling State 4-3

The Golden Eagles are now on a three-game winning streak
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles (3-1) defeated the Grambling State Tigers (1-4) by a final score of 4-3 at the GSU Soccer Complex in Grambling La. on Friday night.
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Ashton Stennis sent a header into the back of the net. JoAnnie Ramos was credited with an assist on the goal by Stennis.
Grambling State responded by tying the game 1-1 in the first half via a header by Kaylee Holt. Brittany Terry and Alyssa Ozuna assisted Holt on the header.
​​​​​​​Grambling State gained their first and only lead of the game after Sarah Dunbar scored on an assist by Jordan King, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Tigers.
Southern Miss would not go quietly into the half. Trailing 2-1, Ramos scored the equalizing goal on a free kick from 25 yards out, making the score 2-2.
After regrouping at half time, the Golden Eagles came out firing in the second half. Miah Zuazua who has been a reliable scorer for Golden Eagles all season long, put her team on top 3-2 after drilling a penalty kick. Zuazua has now scored at least one goal in each of the Golden Eagles last three matches and leads C-USA with a total of five goals scored thus far this season.
Hannah Abrams added an insurance goal with just 1:43 remaining in the game, extending the Golden Eagles' lead 4-2. Abrams goal would quickly prove to be a difference maker in the game as Grambling State scored their third goal of the game just seconds after Abrams added the fourth for Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles showed grit as they fought off the Tigers in the final seconds to preserve the 4-3 win. With their win against Grambling State, the Golden Eagles are now on a three-game winning streak.

Southern Miss will take advantage of an off day before traveling to Hammond, La. on Sunday, September 2 for a 5:00 p.m. (CT) contest against Southeastern Louisiana (2-1-1).
