Bio
Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry announced the hiring of B.A. Vollmuth Thursday as volunteer assistant baseball coach for the program.
"We look forward to having B.A. rejoin as a coach after three years in professional baseball," said Southern Miss coach Scott Berry. "He brings a wealth of baseball knowledge with him and we look forward to him helping to instill to our players the right way of playing the game."
Vollmuth returns to the Golden Eagles after a successful playing career from 2009-2011 in which he compiled a .326 career batting average with 32 doubles, five triples and 40 home runs to go along with 153 RBI. His homer total ranks seventh on the Golden Eagle career charts as does his career slugging percentage (.640).
As a freshman, he helped lead the Golden Eagles to their only College World Series appearance in 2009. In that NCAA tournament, Vollmuth belted a pair of home runs in the same inning of the deciding game of the Atlanta Regional in defeating host Georgia Tech 12-8. The Golden Eagles went to the postseason in all three of his seasons at Southern Miss.
The native of Biloxi, Miss., was taken in the 2011 Major League Baseball Players First Year Draft in the third round by the Oakland Athletics following his junior season. Vollmuth signed and played three professional seasons for that organization.
Vollmuth will coach first base as well as help with hitting and team defense. He will also serve as director of baseball camps for the program.
While serving as an assistant coach, Vollmuth will also be completing requirements for his college degree.
