Southern Miss has found home to be a refuge. After a stretch on the road with losses at McNeese and Mississippi State, the Golden Eagles returned to Marshall Bell and have earned back-to-back draws. Thursday's 1-1 tie with Jacksonville State showed resilience and growth. Coach Owens' squad scored first, created chances to put the match away, and refused to fold when the Gamecocks equalized. The Golden Eagles remain unbeaten at home despite not yet winning in front of their crowd. Sunday against a struggling Southern program is the moment to finally register that first home victory.
Southern arrives in Hattiesburg searching for answers. The Jaguars are 0-1 on the road this season and looking to change that narrative. They opened with a 0-4 loss at home to FGCU, then dropped a road contest at SMU before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Spring Hill at home. That victory showed they can score when they're comfortable, but the road has been brutal. Southern has failed to score in three away contests, and Keilyn Pittman's two goals on the season haven't been enough to create consistent production. Sunday in Hattiesburg presents another chance to find offensive rhythm away from home.
Ava Bynes has been the driving force for Southern Miss with three goals through five matches. Ryan Smith has chipped in a goal and two assists, while Werema and Edwards have each found the back of the net once. The Golden Eagles' scoring has been distributed across the lineup, and that balance combined with home field advantage gives Southern Miss confidence heading into Sunday.
