BOONE, N.C. – Southern Miss soccer (6-6-3, 3-4-1 SBC) struck first Wednesday night at App State, but the Mountaineers responded with three unanswered goals to hand the Golden Eagles a 3-1 setback at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.

Ava Bynes stayed hot for Southern Miss, putting the Golden Eagles in front in the 14th minute. Olivia Tribolet provided the setup before Bynes finished for her team-leading sixth goal of the season, giving her goals in back-to-back matches after scoring the winner at South Alabama on Friday.

Southern Miss carried the advantage deep into the opening half behind its defensive group and goalkeeper Logan McGruder. App State generated pressure throughout the period, but the Golden Eagles kept the Mountaineers off the board until Taylor Duff found the equalizer in the 42nd minute to send the match into halftime tied at one.

App State broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Libby Bermingham scored off an Ellie Garrison assist. Southern Miss continued to battle as the match moved into its final stretch, but Bermingham added her second in the 78th minute to give the Mountaineers the 3-1 advantage.

Bynes and Shaelynn Quick accounted for Southern Miss' two shots on goal, while McGruder finished with three saves. Argentina Estrada, Eduarda Flores Fuculo, Georgia Gray and Quick each went the full 90 minutes for the Golden Eagles.

The loss brings Southern Miss back home with two matches remaining in the regular season and six conference points still on the table. The Golden Eagles will play their final home match Sunday against Georgia Southern before closing the regular season Nov. 1 at ULM.
