Southern Miss Dominates Southern in Owens' First Home Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss soccer (2-2-2) registered a dominant 8-0 victory over Southern (1-4-0) Sunday afternoon at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex in head coach Danny Owens' first home win. The Golden Eagles unleashed a complete performance, controlling possession and creating scoring opportunities throughout the match to deliver the most lopsided victory of the season.
Southern Miss struck quickly and never let up. Ryan Smith opened the scoring at 13' with an assist from Lorilee Taylor, setting the tone for a relentless attacking display. Taylor added a goal herself at 22', then Shaelynn Quick extended the lead to 3-0 at 42' before Oliwia Loeman converted a penalty kick at 43' to give the Golden Eagles a 4-0 halftime advantage. The first half was one-sided dominance, with Southern Miss recording 16 shots and nine shots on goal compared to Southern's three shots.
The second half was more of the same. Olivia Tribolet scored at 46' on an assist from Ava Bynes to push the lead to 5-0. Southern then committed an own goal at 60' to make it 6-0. Alessia Navarro added a goal at 73' assisted by Zara Werema, and Loeman capped the scoring with her second goal at 81'.
Coach Owens was pleased with the performance. "We played good today and it's good to get that result," he said after the match. "It's a great building piece to what we are doing here. I'm really proud of the ladies."
The statistics reflected Southern Miss' superiority. The Golden Eagles recorded 27 shots with 16 on goal, the most shots since the 2024 season opener against Mississippi Valley State (43 shots). The 16 shots on goal also matched the Mississippi Valley contest (20 SOG that day). Southern Miss recorded double-digit shots in each half for the first time since that 2024 Valley game as well, registering 16 in the first half and 11 in the second. The eight goals marked the most since an 8-0 win over Nicholls on August 26, 2021.
The balanced offensive production demonstrates the depth of Owens' attacking arsenal. Six different Southern Miss players found the back of the net with Smith, Taylor, Quick, Loeman, Tribolet, and Navarro. The most players to score in a match since the 8-0 win over Nicholls in 2021. Logan McGruder played the first half in goal and didn't allow a goal before being replaced by Jenni Dähne in the second half.
