Southern Miss heads to Boone coming off one of its strongest road results of the season, a 1-0 victory over South Alabama on Friday. Ava Bynes scored her team-leading fifth goal in the eighth minute off a Lorilee Taylor assist, and the Golden Eagle defense made the early advantage stand for the remaining 82 minutes. The win was Southern Miss' first in Mobile since 2008 and its first against South Alabama as a member of the Sun Belt. Coach Danny Owens' group is now 4-3 away from Hattiesburg this season.
Bynes continues to lead a Southern Miss attack that has produced 24 goals through 14 matches, recording five goals and two assists. Shaelynn Quick follows with four goals, while Taylor has two goals and a team-best four assists. Olivia Tribolet has added three goals and an assist. The Golden Eagles have also posted four clean sheets this season, including 1-0 conference road victories at Arkansas State and South Alabama.
App State enters Wednesday with 11 points in the Sun Belt table, one ahead of Southern Miss, after playing to a 1-1 draw at Arkansas State in its last outing. The Mountaineers have been difficult to break down throughout the season, recording eight clean sheets while putting together an 8-3-4 overall record. Ellie Garrison leads the App State attack with nine goals, while Libby Bermingham has added six.
Wednesday marks the fourth meeting between the programs, with each of the previous three decided by a single goal. App State earned 1-0 victories in 2022 and 2023 before taking a 2-1 decision in Hattiesburg last season. Southern Miss' only previous trip to Boone came in 2023, giving the Golden Eagles another opportunity to earn their first win in the series while adding to a road résumé that already includes four victories this fall.
With three regular-season matches remaining, Wednesday carries added weight for two teams separated by just one point in the conference standings. Southern Miss enters the week with 10 Sun Belt points and an opportunity to continue climbing before returning home for its final match in Hattiesburg.
