MOBILE, Ala. – Southern Miss soccer (6-5-3, 3-3-1 SBC) picked up three points on the road Friday night, shutting out South Alabama (4-7-2, 2-3-1 SBC), 1-0, at The Cage. Ava Bynes supplied the early goal, while the Golden Eagle defense made it stand for the remaining 82 minutes to secure Southern Miss' fourth clean sheet of the season.

Southern Miss wasted little time finding the breakthrough. Lorilee Taylor created the opportunity in the eighth minute, setting up Bynes for her team-leading fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage. Taylor remained active throughout the opening half with three shots, while the Golden Eagles took the lead into the break after limiting South Alabama to two shots on goal.

The second half belonged to the Southern Miss defense. South Alabama pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, but Argentina Estrada, Georgia Gray and Eduarda Flores Fuculo helped the Golden Eagles absorb the pressure and keep the Jaguars off the board. Logan McGruder handled the chances that reached her, finishing with three saves to earn the shutout.

South Alabama finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots, but only three Jaguar attempts reached the frame. Southern Miss remained composed late as the hosts generated several chances in the closing minutes, including three shots after the 87th minute. The Golden Eagles turned each away, and Estrada nearly added a second at the other end with an attempt on goal in the final seconds.

Friday's victory carried some added history for the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss earned its first win at South Alabama since a 2-1 victory on Aug. 26, 2008, snapping an 18-year drought in Mobile. The result was also Southern Miss' first win over the Jaguars since 2021 and its first against South Alabama as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.
