HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Soccer (1-2-2) battled Jacksonville State (1-2-2) to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex, securing another point at home. The Golden Eagles dominated much of the match, outshooting the Gamecocks 14-13 while maintaining possession advantage throughout the second half.
Zara Werema gave Southern Miss the lead at 71' with an assist from Olivia Tribolet, putting the Golden Eagles in front heading into the final stretch. Southern Miss controlled the tempo after scoring and created multiple opportunities to extend the lead, but Jacksonville State responded quickly. Michelle Hochstadt equalized for the Gamecocks at 82' with a rocket outside the box, forcing the match into a draw.
Logan McGruder played the full 90 minutes in goal for Southern Miss, recording five saves to keep the match level. Her performance kept the Golden Eagles competitive throughout, particularly in the second half when Southern Miss controlled play. Jacksonville State's goalkeeper made two saves, responding to the Golden Eagles' offensive pressure. Tribolet was dangerous throughout the second half, combining with Werema for the goal while also recording multiple shots on target that tested Jacksonville State's defense.
Southern Miss won the statistical battle with 14 total shots compared to Jacksonville State's 13. The Golden Eagles registered six shots on target and controlled 55 percent of possession. Coach Owens' squad created seven corner kick opportunities and maintained great defensive shape while pushing for the win in the closing minutes. The draw keeps the Golden Eagles unbeaten at home.
The second-half performance showed improvement from the earlier road struggles. Southern Miss created a high volume of chances and maintained defensive discipline, with Ella Jefcoat, Tribolet, and Georgia Gray earning yellow cards but the team never lost focus. The Golden Eagles had multiple opportunities late to win the match but couldn't capitalize.
