Men’s and Women’s Track Completes First Day of Sun Belt Outdoor Championships

MOBILE, Ala. – Southern men's and women's track and field opened the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Jaguar Track with strong performances across the entry list in both preliminaries and final events.
The Golden Eagle women stand in a three-way tie for seventh place with five total points through four final events. The men are also in a three-way tie for seventh place with a total of three points through three scored events.
In the women's hammer throw, both of Southern Miss' entries were unable to land an attempt within the sector, finishing with no marks. In the men's hammer throw, Qamarion Oatis' second heave landed for a mark of 193-6 (58.99m), setting a new personal best and placing inside the top nine to advance to the final three attempts. Oatis was unable to top his best attempt and finished eighth overall in the event, scoring one point for the Golden Eagles.
Ryan DeBarber earned another two points for the Golden Eagles with a seventh place finish in the men's javelin throw. DeBarber's first three were all enough to qualify him to advance to the final nine athletes with his third heave of 183-4 (55.88m) advancing him well inside the top nine. His final attempt of the day saw him reach out to a mark of 190-11 (58.19m).
In the only other scoring event of the day for Southern Miss, Corinne Croy cruised to a personal best time in the women's 10,000 meters, finishing fourth overall in 37 minutes, 1.02 seconds. Croy finished lap one in ninth place before falling as far back as 10th through 3,600 meters and later through 6,000 meters. In the final 4,000 however, she began to claw back ground, jumping to eighth in the next lap and then making her move to lead the pack by the 7,600-meter mark. She led through 8,800 meters before falling back to fifth, passing up one final competitor to finish fifth.
In preliminary action, Addison Rainey and Cadence Lapp advanced after finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the women's 1,500 meters prelims. Rainey crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 33.66 seconds while Lapp finished in 4 minutes, 39.21 seconds in a separate heat. Both athletes finished second in their respective heat to earn a bid to the 1,500 finals on Saturday.
Chrisiyona Quarles set a new PB with a 1 minute, 2.30 second time in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Quarles finished 12th in the field, just missing on a spot in the finals. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Javel Fullerton finished with the third best time of the day 50.87 second mark to advance him to the event's finals. He joined a trio of athletes on the day that bested the previous Jaguar Track facility record.
In the women's 200 meters, Kennedi Sanders tied her season best with a 23.89 second final to finish ninth in the event, missing on a spot in the finals by 0.002 seconds. Valencia Watson (24.47), Tacherria Lawson (24.82) and Amia Wright all also crossed the finish line with the 17th, 24th and 36th best times of the day.
Valentino Rudolph won his heat in the men's 200 meters with a 20.88 second time to finish third overall. Mike Jones clocked a 21.84 second mark to finish 22nd overall while Keon Buck's 22.46 second finish placed him 33rd.
Action continues tomorrow with track events starting with the rest of the men's 400-meter hurdles at 11 a.m. The men's long jump starts at 2:30 p.m. to open field events for the day. Nine events will hold their final flights with another nine prelims left to finish. Action will be streamed on ESPN+ with broadcasts airing at 5 p.m.
