Nichols’ Record-Breaking Long Jump Leads Golden Eagles in Day Two of Sun Belt Championships

MOBILE, Ala. – Tyler Nichols took the top spot on the podium with a Sun Belt Conference record 26-10½ (8.19m) leap in the men's long jump to break the league's 11-year-old record of 26-8¼ (8.13m). Nichols now owns Division I's second-best long jump mark and led the way for Southern Miss' second day in the Port City as the Golden Eagles continued in the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships.
Nichols was joined by teammate De'Aundre Ward, who finished second in the long jump with a season-best 26-8½, beating out the old Sun Belt and facility records as well. Ward's mark is the third longest long jump in Division I this season. Cadence Lapp also took gold on the day after setting a new person best with a 10-minute, 35.71 second finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Michael Kasemervisz heaved a 56-1¼ (17.10m) mark to record one point in the men's shot put as well.
In preliminary action, Emme Bates led the way in the women's 800 meters with a 2-minute, 8.37-second mark. Nikoby Johnson finished second overall in the men's 100-meter prelims to advance to the finals with a time of 10.38 (1.3m/s) seconds for a new personal best. Markeith Thompson advanced in the men's 110-meter hurdles with the fifth-fastest overall mark of 14:01 seconds (1.1m/s), setting a personal best.
Kennedi Sanders won her heat of the women's 400 meters to advance to the finals with a a 54.61seconds while Addison McLaurin claimed the final spot with a season-best 55:16 second mark. In the men's 800 meters, Saxon Brown set a new personal best after clocking a 1-minute, 50.74 second time.
Southern Miss sits in sixth place in both the men's and women's tables through eight men's events and seven women's events. Action picks back up tomorrow, May 16, with men's triple jump and women's discus getting underway at Noon. Track events begin at 4 p.m. with the running of the women's 4x100-meter relay.
