EUGENE, Ore. – Southern Miss junior track & field athlete Tyler Nichols finished 14th overall in the men's long jump at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field. His scoring mark of 24-8¼ (7.52m) earned him Second-Team All-American laurels for the first time in his outdoor career.
Nichols, a native of Clinton, Mississippi, was making his first appearance at the NCAA DI Outdoor Championships after a successful start to the spring that saw him finish ninth overall in the long jump at the NCAA DI Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Jumping in the second flight on the eastern side of the Hayward Field oval, Nichols reached out to 24-3¾ (7.41m, +0.2m/s) on his first attempt. On his second jump of the evening, he added on another four-and-a-half inches to reach 24-8¼ (7.52m, +1.4m/s). On his final jump, he posted another 24-3 ¾ (7.41m, -0.2m/s) mark.
His best leap of the day was tied for 13th in the field alongside Kentucky's King McNair, but slipped to 14th due to tiebreakers. Nichols' 14th-place finish guaranteed him status as a 2026 NCAA All-American as a second-team selection. He concludes his 2026 campaign as a two-time All-American after earning second team honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well.
Southern Miss' stay in Eugene continues with Tyler Hughes making his outdoor championship debut in the men's high jump on Friday, June 12. Hughes' flight begins at 6:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. PT) at Oregon's Hayward Field.
