MOBILE, Ala. – Stewart Puckett homered twice, including a two-run shot in the eighth, to lift South Alabama over Southern Miss 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Eddie Stanky Field to salvage the final game of the Sun Belt Conference series.
Despite the loss, No. 18 Southern Miss (31-13 overall, 13-8 Sun Belt) won its second consecutive league set.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the eighth, Matthew Russo was hit by a pitch before Drey Barrett singled him to third. Ben Higdon, who along with Davis Gillespie had two hits in the contest, singled in Russo to put them up 3-2.
Josh Och, who entered the game for Golden Eagle starter Camden Sunstrom, allowed a leadoff double and then a homer to Puckett two batters later to suffer the loss and fall to 4-2. Och allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout in his outing.
The two-run eighth overshadowed an outstanding start from Camden Sunstrom, who threw his career-best seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Southern Miss took the early lead with a solo run in the third. After Tucker Stockman singled to right to open the inning, Lawson Odom bunted him to second before Seth Smith tripled to center to give the visitors an early advantage.
The Jaguars then tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of fourth. With one out, Blake Guerin double off the top of the left centerfield wall. After a Southern Miss fielding error that put runners at the corners, Guerin scored on a fielder's choice.
Puckett then gave USA the lead with his first homer of the day to center in the sixth. He now has eight on the year.
The Golden Eagles then tied the game again in the seventh. Higdon opened the frame with a single and then went to second on a Stockman sacrifice. Odom then singled him in with a drive to right.
Zach Stevens, who threw the final three innings in relief of Daniel Gonzalez, earned the victory and improved to 5-1, after limiting Southern Miss to a run on three hits.
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Tulane for their final midweek regular season contest at Greer Stadium at Turchin Field. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
